RIP Lucy Glennon (@lucytweeting)

I've just found out that Lucy Glennon (@lucytweeting) has passed away.

Those of you who knew Lucy will know that she was tireless in everything she did. Even when she was very, very tired. She always somehow found that last spoon to defend a friend or fight a wrong.

She was one of the first people I got to know on social media and she would often get in touch to see if anyone was writing about a particular disability story of the day or if we were "live-tweeting" a parliament debate.

I've met just a handful of people campaigning who simply march on, resolutely, no matter what obstacles are put in their way. "Over there, in the distance" is a condition so painful or cruel, they simply force themselves to look away. It is always there, yet never there. It controls everything they want to do, yet controls nothing they need to do.

That for me was Lucy. She couldn't bear injustice and fought it however tired she was that day. If it was no-one else's "job" it would be hers to speak for those she worried were voiceless.

I suppose because of her remarkable resolve, I thought of her condition, Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa as something "over there" as well. We made each other laugh on dark days, shared recipes on Twitter and discussed  our dysfunctional bodies online in the hope it might inform others. But I didn't think of her as sick or vulnerable. I thought of her as a lion in a cute hat.

  2. Those we love don't go away: They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear. For death leaves a heartache no one can heal, and love leaves a memory no one can steal.

    1. How is it hypocritical to mourn the death of a friend?

    2. It is hypocritical to do so in public when you, Sue Marsh have sold out, betrayed and basically pissed on, the work that Lucy and so many others, unsung have done to help those surviving this hell on benefits.

By accepting that well paid but still, cheap whore job at Maximus, you also pissed all over those who supported you. You showed no care, no shame, nothing.

But those of us in the know, sussed out years ago that you were only interested in bloating your ego, your bank balance and your fake integrity.

Alll Suey2 wants is a seat in the Newsnight studio with her name on it.

Loads of us have said the same about you Sue, for years and years.

Hope you get the sack from Maximus soon Sue. Probably won't be long now.

Mmmmmm, signing on.... mmmmmm pleading to get back on ESA, mmmmmm Hardship Loans, mmmmm Mandatory Reconsiderations, humiliation and bullying at JC+, mmmmmmmm Conditionality, Sanctions.... ad inifinitum

Mmmmmmm all of it, just for you Sue.

      You deserve it.

    1. Your free to make comment where you like, and the fact is she has a job makes no difference to the story.

      Freedom of speech mate

To many disabled people are being forced back to work , we all have to live now I'm sad as most are she went to Maximus but the way I look at it when you not getting benefits you have to live.

    2. "DRUK and Sue Marsh have both decided to work for Maximus for one reason, cold hard cash. Their ethics (not that Marsh had any to begin with) went out of the window when they saw what they could make from Maximus." Quoted from another forum re DRUK selling out to Maximus - couldn't have put it better myself.

    3. I'm not proud just broke and I'm fed up with being classed as a scrounger by labour and the so called Progress group, if Maximus needs a bloke in a wheelchair I'm available .

I'll do it for £14,000, but I may need help mind you.

    4. Can you not even imagine for the tiniest second that my motives might not have been selfish? That not even a drop of progress can come from me working to improve WCAs or even entertain the idea that it could do even an ounce of good? I'd hate to feel that way about life

    5. Actually Sue, I believe you have been duped to shut you up and your job will last until May the 8th.

    6. treborc - Sue Marsh was NOT forced into work due to lack of money. She had every government benefit possible, a husband working in middle management (with a good salary) expenses for all the interviews she gave, columns she wrote for newspapers, PLUS the money given to her by "go fund me" etc., Being paid £50000 for working 2 days a week, will not bother her one bit

For the record, NONE of the tweets simply critical of me have been deleted, only the spell spam

    1. You'd do better apologising for selling out the people who supported you.

You apologising for spam is the same as taking a big shít into the mouths of the sick and disabled.

You should be ashamed of yourself

  14. Hi Sue,

I'm interested to know if you are still blogging on disability & welfare issues or have you been stopped as part of your contract with Maximus? I'd also be interested to hear of what you have been doing at Mximus - is there any reason why you can't blog about that?

Don't expect Suey to ever speak to the sick and disabled again, she's amongst the "proper" people now.

    1. Didn't you know Michael? Suey has gone off to work for Maximus and be paid lots and lots of money. Money that those who are sick or disabled could only ever dream of. Suey doesn't give a shit about the people who used to support her, she only cares about herself and making sure her ego is ever more bloated.

    2. Yes I know she works for Maximum. But it was my understanding she intended to work towards making the WCA better for people. I do wish she would blog about her experience at Maximum, it may help with the levels of justifiable anger.

    1. Arnold, you need to remove your tongue from Suey's anus, but you won't, as you seem to adore the flavour and stench of her faeces. Have you no dignity? Suey, made a good life for herself conning the people she reckoned she was campaigning for, then dumped them at the drop of a hat (or the promise of an epic salary) - she gave no thought to you or anyone else, just herself.

Suey only cares about herself. She scorns and derides the disabled and sick that supported her.

Suey was never a hero, just a self serving careerist who USED the sick and disabled for her own ends. She do brilliantly as an MP which is where her real ambition lies.

Along the way she managed to get away with being foul about fat people, the mentally ill, the traumatised, those with learning disabilities and anyone else who she didn't think matched the so called severity of her own illness. They were all scorned by her. You defend this?

Suey deserves every bit of scorn and derision she gets.

      Here's hoping she's sacked on May 6th.

  20. I'm contacting people as I wish to raise awareness about the following issue. I think this is a serious issue since one of the leading causes of death among young people, above war, disease and traffic accidents, is suicide http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/subnational-health1/leading-causes-of-death/2009/leading-causes-of-death-in-england-and-wales---2009.html
After reading a section on the MIND website about the charity's MEAM approach and I decided to write to people. I'd recently seen the Tories' pledge to commit £8 billion to the NHS which, along with the LibDems policy on mental health, I think is fairly arbitrary, as I'm not sure that these key points address the issues in the report. Nor do I believe talking therapies or Mindfulness therapies make a serious long term improvement to people's lives, especially since the MQ report clearly shows there's no research funding into mental illness or treatments for this. I think this is a serious issue since on of the leading causes of death among young people, above war, disease and traffic accidents, is actually suicide http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/subnational-health1/leading-causes-of-death/2009/leading-causes-of-death-in-england-and-wales---2009.html
I'm not suggesting that Mindfulness and Talk therapies don't work and aren't helpful, but really it's just talking, which is nothing to do with actual scientific research into mental illness and the drugs used to treat these. Information and a video about the MQ report and the gap in research for mental health can be found on the website
    http://www.joinmq.org/news-opinion/entry/new-analysis-reveals-historic-under-funding-of-uk-mental-health-research
Labour's recent manifesto mentions a focus on the NHS and improvement for mental health treatment in pages 20 and 33, primarily the integration and improvement of patient care alongside clinical trials and the implementation of the NICE guidelines, but this doesn't really mention anything about researching funding for mental as outlined in the MQ report.
A response I'd received from the conservative Lord Howe about the £8 billion pledge for the NHS was that those funds would be available as and when they'd made 'efficiency gains' under the Five Year Forward View, which refers to services, ie talk therapy and drug treatment.
I realise the parties have discussed mental health and the NHS in their campaigns, and that charity organisations have a duty to remain impartial. However, after reading MQ report about the lack of funding and then doing some research, I did find articles about there'd been a loss for drug manufacturers along with a story on the Health Secretary's investment deal with JP Morgan and pharmaceutical companies to tackle dementia. Obviously, I understand dementia is a serious illness, but then investing in profit businesses and not investing into research for mental health seems like an imbalance.
    http://www.cityam.com/211839/jp-morgan-joins-forces-pharma-giants-lead-100m-dementia-fund
    http://www.cityam.com/210598/uk-becomes-net-importer-drugs-first-time-century-pharmaceutical-output-drops-and-patents
Investment and progress with the NHS might lead to better services and improvement to therapies already available to people that suffer from mental illness but the current method for treating and diagnosing mental illness seems like a guessing game for GPs which further scientific research might assist.
